Week 2 was very wild. We saw back-to-back ties, the first in NFL history. In addition, we saw prolific quarterback play from Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Tampa Bay’s Ryan Fitzpatrick, who have thrown a combined 18 TDs and one INT this season. Also unsurprisingly, the Cleveland Browns continue to find new ways to lose games. Week 3 most likely won’t be as crazy, but you never know. Once again, here’s the key matchups, game to avoid, and the lock of the week.
New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons (-3): This NFC South matchup features two teams with Super Bowl aspirations. Atlanta will be playing without its lead running back Devonta Freeman, and wideout Julio Jones may not be 100 percent for this game. New Orleans’ defense has struggled early, yielding 48 points per game through its first two outings. As I take a look at this matchup, I’m having a hard time trusting this Saints team, as the Minneapolis miracle may have broken the defense. In this case, I’m riding with the Falcons to get it done. Falcons win 27-20
Los Angeles Chargers vs. Los Angeles Rams (-7): Week 3 marks the first time in well over two decades that two NFL Los Angeles franchises square off. Both teams, especially the Rams, carry significant Super Bowl hopes. The Rams have lived up to the hype so far, starting out 2-0 with margins of victory of 33-13 and 34-0. The Chargers, on the other hand, have dealt with some injuries on both sides of the ball. Los Angeles is a better team at this point in time, and I trust Todd Gurley and their defense to continue its winning ways. Rams win 34-17
Dallas Cowboys vs. Seattle Seahawks (-1.5): This Sunday’s matchup is a must-win for the Seahawks, who play in their first home game in 2018. Dallas, meanwhile, is coming off a huge win against the Giants. Last season, there were talks about Earl Thomas wanting to join the Cowboys, which brings another level of intrigue for this one. However, I feel confident Seattle wins because of the Cowboys’ weak road performance in Week 1 at Carolina. Seahawks win 17-13
Game to Avoid
Oakland Raiders vs. Miami Dolphins (-3): The 0-2 Raiders head to South Beach to face the 2-0 Dolphins. This game may be uneasy on the eyes, especially involving the matchup between the Dolphins’ mediocre Ryan Tannehill against the Raiders woeful defense. You probably don’t want to find yourself watching or betting on this one.
Lock of the Week
Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (-6.5): This is going to be an easy win for the Jaguars as the Titans hold a significant disadvantage at quarterback. Blaine Gabbert has a good chance to start against his former team and Jacksonville’s defense will eat him alive.
