July 31st is one of my favorite days of the year. MLB teams are making decisions about whether they go all in, in hopes for a World Series or sell off some pieces to set themselves up for the future. It’s a time of year where general managers make or break their legacies. The playoff stretch is fast approaching, and with team scouts scouring the country looking at a number of players, we look at the top 10 impact players who could be dealt this year.
10. Ben Zobrist
UTIL, Oakland Athletics
Season Stats: 49 games, .266/.360/.456, 5 HR, 29 RBI
At free agent at season’s end, Zobrist has fought the injury bug a bit to begin the season. The career .264 hitter is a guy that almost every team would want; a player that can play almost any position you ask him to and knows how to handle the bat. His flexibility makes him a really valuable piece for the stretch run, as he can play second, short, third, and left. Teams with needs at any of those positions could look towards Zobrist. A team to watch in the Zobrist sweepstakes would be the San Francisco Giants, who recently designated their starting third baseman, Casey McGehee, for assignment and are rather weak at the position. With the Athletics struggling to win games in the first quarter of the year, look for Billy Beane to move his big pieces, including Zobrist.
